Statera

By bringing the 104th Sorel Island to life in an immersive and interactive way, cadabra invites the public to discover a magical universe that amazes, enlightens and resonates on a deeply emotional level.

Challenge

Showcase the exceptionally rich and diverse biological and historical interests of this deeply fascinating part of the provincial tapestry, and create a tourism destination strategy as part of a greater economic stimulation plan.

Approach

Sorel-Tracy leads the way in navigating the challenges of cohabitation between nature and industry. Statera is inspired by and built to reflect the balance between these two universes.

Outcome

A multimedia journey that takes place in two parts. First, an interactive quest that recreates the night-time environment of the islands of Sorel in an ancient boat hangar. This is The Islands at Night, where visitors are guided by a smart lantern through a universe that floats between reality and fantasy, taking a tour of the history, biology, ecology and legends of the region, absorbing information and wonder in equal parts. Next is The River That Walks, a 360-degree video exploration of over 1,000 years of history that lights up an enormous riverside screening dome. To create the content, the team visited and filmed countless locations to produce visual reconstructions, calling on actors, historians and local community members for their own pieces of the historical patchwork. The result is a spectacular showing of the region’s roots and characteristics, and between video presentations visitors can light up sections of the dome themselves through interactive hotspots built into the ground.

The magic lantern: a unique intelligent guide into another world

The beating heart of the Statera experience is interaction. The adventure is crafted like a storybook—you are the hero, and the magic lantern is your guide, a smart object that determines your path. The team at cadabra was the force behind both the ideation and production of the lantern, which contains multiple types of technology that allow it to act as a responsive guide and not just an autopilot. The design was inspired by the lamps used by miners around the mid-20th century.

It really feels like being in a movie, like Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park!
