Sidewalk Toronto
Public lab for future urban life
June 2018
Toronto, CA
CREATING ACCESSIBLE TOOLS FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE AN ACTIVE, CRITICAL ROLE IN THE PLANNING OF THEIR CITY.
307 is the first office and experimental workspace for Sidewalk Toronto, a tech and urban planning partnership made up of Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs (SWL) and Waterfront Toronto. Together, they aspire to create a new kind of mixed-use community on Toronto’s eastern waterfront. Daily tous les jours was commissioned to create a space that facilitates conversations between Sidewalk Toronto and the public about the future of this neighborhood.
A PLACE FOR INPUT + DISCUSSION + EXPERIMENTATION + NEW IDEAS + ACTION = 307
Inspired by the way people transform cities, DTLJ imagined the ground floor of 307 as a public lab for the future of urban life. The result is a set of colorful, rolling, modular, stackable, playful interactive tools that allow for different levels of engagement. Here, people are invited to experience the challenges of building a city; to learn, to contribute and to feedback.
A collection of flexible furniture was designed as a framework to display Sidewalk Labs’s evolving vision, and a friendly place for the public to engage. A series of interactive games, ranging from custom playing cards to an experimental Generative Map allow users to learn about the processes of urban planning and imagine various scenarios for the future city.
In response to 307’s location amidst a developing industrial area, DTLJ made this once grey building pop!with a bold and warm graphic touch inside and out. Watery blue walls, colorful murals and vibrant patterns all contribute to an unique atmosphere where people feel comfortable and welcome.
THIS PROJECT WAS COMMISSIONED BY ALPHABET’S SIDEWALK LABS, IN COLLABORATION WITH WATERFRONT TORONTO.
